Yash Raj Films CEO Quits

Yash Raj Films needs a new CEO. Evidently Sanjeev Kohli, director and CEO of YRF, gave up his job following a major dispute with Aditya Chopra on Monday.

Kohli had been with the company for the last 15 years. “With corporatisation being the norm of the day, Aditya was infuriated that Yash Raj Films was being perceived as a family run set-up. He wanted to do away with the mother hen approach that the senior officials had towards their family members. For instance YRF’s International Operations head, Avtar Panesar and his son were being protected by Sanjeev. Sanjeev’s son, Akshay Kohli was also part of Yash Raj whom Aditya believed had no knowledge of the industry. Aditya was strictly against the family ties,” said our source.

“Overseas profits are a huge part of the film’s turnover. YRF films’ poor performance troubled Aditya who blamed Sanjeev for the overseas losses of the films.” Our source added, “Sanjeev wanted to do a lot for YRF but he was not allowed to. Aditya believed Sanjeev didn’t work as per his potential. Their ideas didn’t match as Sanjeev comes from the old school of thought. The differences increased with the failure of every consequent YRF film. Finally on Monday afternoon things reached a head, Aditya and Sanjeev had a huge argument, and Sanjeev resigned.”

The source further added, “Sanjeev wrote a press release stating that he quit because he wanted to do something on his own and that he would continue to work as a consultant for YRF. However it is clear that the ‘consultant bit’ is just a formality. Sunil Hansraj, who earlier held an important position at YRF, faced a similar ordeal. He was retained as a consultant but his services were discontinued after a couple of months.”
