No Movie role for IPL’s Miss Bollywood

There will be no Bollywood movie role with Shah Rukh Khan or in fact in any Bollywood movie for the winner of the Miss Bollywood IPL 2009 contest being run by the Indian Premier League (IPL). But she will get a chance to visit India.

Commentators interviewing winners at each game had been asking finalists how they would feel about a role with Shah Rukh and as late as Monday, press releases issued on behalf of the IPL were still saying that 'the winner would receive a role in a Bollywood movie, 50,000 rands in cash, a business class trip to India and other prizes'.

But IPL spokesperson Trevor Jones, who initially denied that this had ever been said, confirmed to IANS that there had been some confusion around the Bollywood movie role: "The launch press release said the winner 'stands to win a role in a Bollywood movie', although subsequent releases should have been clearer on this."

"The initial release did not say the person would win such a role because such a thing could never be guaranteed in advance; neither did the announcement refer to starring with Shah Rukh Khan.

"We're sorry if there's been any confusion on this. We still believe the overall prize is a worthy one for the ultimate winner."

At each IPL game, a finalist is selected from the crowd, as a measure to create a further element of fun and excitement at the matches.

Asked about the criteria used in selection of the finalists, Jones said: "In keeping with the emphasis on fun and excitement, these criteria are different from the rigid score sheet format of a typical beauty pageant."

Jones also said that Bollywood stars Shah Rukh and Preity Zinta provided their input and some ideas before the launch, but have had no direct involvement since they spend most of their time travelling with their respective teams while in South Africa.

Jones dispelled any concern about potential unfairnesses in the selection process by saying that anonymous 'spotters' made choices, after which the project leader of the programme made the final choice.

"Cameramen do not have the final choice, they can make suggestions, which may or may not be useful. There are adequate measures built into the process to prevent abuse. Disclosing the nature of these measures would defeat their object," Jones added.

"If there were to be any structural weakness in the initiative, it would have come from people such as model agents trying to identify our Miss Bollywood spotters and influence them. We believe we have avoided this potential problem."

On the question of why finalists selected had been almost exclusively Indian or white women so far, and whether this was because there were very few Black women attending IPL games, Jones said: "There is no quota system in operation.

"We believe it is neither desirable nor practical to try to operate a quota system at individual matches or in terms of the overall Miss Bollywood IPL SA initiative."

After the last entrants are decided, a web-based voting process will open on the iplt20.com web site for about 48 hours to reduce the total entrants from 48 to a short list of finalists. Details will be announced in a general release closer to the time.

"The finalists will be brought to Johannesburg at IPL cost," Jones concluded.

"The format of the final event will be made known closer to the time in a general media announcement. At this stage, the intention is to crown Miss Bollywood IPL SA before the final, and then have the winner and all finalists also present at that match."

IPL fans under house Arrest

The second edition of the Indian Premier League seems to be jinxed. As if shifting the tournament to South Africa wasn't enough, fans have to face yet another blow. They may have to spend the rest of the season watching those gigantic sixes and sexy cheerleaders on the sad 21" at home, thanks to the crack down on eateries screening the matches illegally.

Spoilt sport

The second edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) seems to be jinxed. Fans who had just overcome the shock of the tournament moving to South Africa have to now contend with another disappointment. Pubs and restaurants, which had been attracting substantial numbers by screening the IPL on big screens, can no longer do so, according to a Delhi High Court order.

The HC order, applicable to restaurants across India, issued on Monday cracked down on eateries and bars screening the matches illegally. This was in response to a petition filed by MSM Satellite Pvt Limited, which owns SET Max, the official broadcaster of IPL 2.

And the Mumbai police are taking the HC directive very seriously. On Wednesday night, as patrons were engrossed in the game between Mumbai Indians and Deccan Chargers at Bootleggers, a pub in Colaba, the police stalled the screening. They arrested the manager of the pub and even seized the set-top box as the match was being screened illegally.

Confirming the raid Deepak P Vishwasrao, senior police inspector, Colaba police station said, "The pub manager was booked under the Copyright Act for illegally showing the IPL matches," said Vishwasrao.

A team from Novex Communication, which has the sole cable distribution rights for all Sony Channels, reported that an Andheri-based restaurant Time and Again was among the many restaurants in the city that was screening the game without acquiring the required rights from Set MAX.

While Novex officials claim that they have clippings of patrons enjoying the game at Time and Again, the restaurant manager rubbished the allegations. The manager Sanjay Patil said, "Forget Set MAX, we are not screening any MSM channel."

False allegations

Novex has listed around 13 restaurants and pubs that are screening the matches illegally (see box), but most of them have blatantly denied the charge. A spokesperson from Aurus, a restaurant and lounge bar in Juhu, said, "We do not have screens in our lounge and hence screening the IPL is out of the question."

Bandra's famous Vie Lounge also appears on the list, but claims that they showed distributors the door when they approached them with the licence to screen the tournament. "We denied their proposal, as we were not interested in screening the matches," said an employee at the lounge.

It is only to stop restaurant owners from illegally cashing in on the IPL fever that MSM and Novex moved court.

"We filed a petition as the number of restaurants screening IPL matches and cable operators supplying the signals to commercial places, illegally has escalated. I know the viewers will be unhappy but we need to curb the illegal practice," said Ketan Kanakia, owner of Novex.

SRK planning to sell of IPL team

Shah Rukh Khan is contemplating selling off his Indian Premier League team Knight Riders. This is what a famous business magazine is claiming. SRK had dropped “Kolkata’ from his team’s name just before the IPL season 2 began.

http://sachiniti.files.wordpress.com/2007/03/srk-snap.jpg

According to the magazine’s reports there are speculations that SRK is in talks with three big companies to take over his entire shareholding in the Knight Riders team. These names are said to be – Cell giant Nokia (SRK is their brand ambassador and they are also his team’s sponsors), Anil Dhirubhai Ambani group and Sahara group. It can be recalled that the King Khan had purchased the Kolkata franchise for a whopping Rs. 300 crore last year.

Now if he sells it he can at least make a cool profit of Rs. 100-150 crore. The magazine further claims that earlier SRK was just interested in selling a part of its stake but all those whom he approached also wanted management control which lead him to the three names mentioned above to sell his entire shareholding.

SRK has been quiet unlucky in the last season as well as the present on going one where his team is dipping right to the bottom of the chart. So may be it is that or may be he has realized owning a cricket team is not as easy as owning a production house. -Sampurn Media
